Have you seen the new Netflix documentary film, Dogs? The cute aspect is so daunting that it seems to me that I can’t binge. Every dog has a worthwhile adventure to savor.
Every dog, in fact, has its own tale. Many pups remain in shelters waiting for months to be adopted; when their day eventually arrives, it is also the happiest moment in their life and in the lives of their new family. Love for puppies is contagious.
There are several variables to consider when determining which type of dog to bring home, however. Their height, exercise schedule, needs for grooming, and other social characteristics, like can they get along with kids? If you are not keen on your understanding of dog breeds, it may prove to be a crapshoot to choose between a few mutts. Generally speaking, working breeds are big and require more exercise, while stubborn and loyal to a fault maybe toy breeds.
The American Kennel Club is an excellent resource for identifying the best type of dog for your home. Each year, it also puts out a list showing the most popular dog breeds; we have found the top 15 and defined their attributes below. While at your local shelter you might not find many purebred pups, being prepared with an understanding of the most prevalent breeds will help you make an educated decision.
If you’re wondering what the best dog breeds are for you, check out each of the most popular dog breeds below to find a perfect pooch.
Popular Dog Breeds
The Labrador Retriever has, for good reason, been the most common dog breed for many years. These lovable pups were tracked back to the island of Newfoundland but ended up taking the name of the nearby Canadian coast inexplicably. They make some of the greatest companions either way.
Another resilient and loyal breed that has proved to make a great pet are German Shepherds. They are intelligent and hard-working, making them perfect for households with or without small kids, but they are much more distant than the Retrievers that are naturally sweet.
This is one of the popular dog breeds. Golden Retrievers are very close in many respects to the Lab, just as kind-hearted and family-friendly. They are a clever and athletic breed, which is obvious from the Air Bud series. A Golden is the beloved title character.
Instagram is overflowing with many dogs, but these little Frenchies own some of the most popular profiles. They are irresistibly cute because of their pointed ears and wrinkle-laden faces. French Bulldogs are vigilant but can adapt to any household and prefer to be quiet.
When it comes to popular dog breeds, the English bulldog is on the first list. The American Kennel Club calls the Bulldog “dignified,” though they probably feel anything when they are coddled like the sweet babies that they are. Bulldogs are obedient and caring, and they will make excellent companions.
The most identifiable characteristics of this common breed include prominent noses and long ears. Snoopy may have been too clever for his own good, however, not only to Charlie Brown but to his bird mate, Woodstock, he was a true friend. True beagles appear to have the same features.
For several years, owing to their enviable fur styles, poodles have suffered wisecracks from the general public. Currently, they are whip-smart and extremely competitive, having been bred in Germany for duck hunting. Now, we equate these pooches with high society, but in any house, they’d be content.
Rottweilers, although tough on the outside, is really just loyal softies. They are excellent guard dogs that are considered to be particularly dumb and sweet to their owners.
The Yorkie is the first toy breed on this list to appear, but they are not that distinct from their fellow canines. They are set apart by their size and floor-length hair, but they are considered to be feisty and as energetic as any of the standard working pets of the breed.
German Shorthair Pointer
It is one of the most popular dog breeds. A Pointer’s original intention was to point at and retrieve hunted prey quite literally, and no other breed was ever quite as good at it. There is a lovely coat for the German Shorthair variety, which is, understandably, why this breed is one of the most common.
Do you like these popular dog breeds? In the eyes of a boxer, there’s always a glint that shows me that they can hold all my secrets. They are a big, tall race that makes a perfect watchdog, and they are fiercely loyal to children’s families.
The Alaskan Malamutes are a larger cousin to the breed, but they look very similar in their face and coat. If you have seen a small Arctic sledding dog, then you have also crossed paths with a Husky. Since Huskies were raised in the cold for hard work, they make perfect companions for individuals with active lifestyles.
Ironically energetic, they are provided very little endurance by the Dachsunds’ genetic predisposition to having short legs. Still, with all they do, they give their all, making for excellent sidekicks and watchdogs.
Some of the biggest breeds out there are Great Danes, which has gained them a reputation for being gentle giants. Although the breed has roots in Germany and is also recognized as a German dog in its native land, they are named after the people of Denmark. Great Dane pups are still happy to please and nice with families either way.
Pembroke Welsh Corgi
This is one of the popular dog breeds. Corgis have very short legs, like Dachshunds, but “big dog” says all about their personalities. They have plenty of energy and are brave, making them faithful and devoted companions.

Hiya! There are many embroidery artists in our beautiful country. Their skillful hands created unique works of floral and landscape embroidery. Many of them began to learn embroidery from the elderly artisans in the craft village when they were 6 or 7 years old. While they work independently, they have no official community. We built Hand Embroidery World to link embroidery artists, introduce our traditional embroidery items and embroidery techniques to the world.
